We often get asked how we came to start Rose & Whistle. It all started with…two attorneys. I know, unexpected, right?! We were friends and attorneys trying, like so many, to find that perfect balance between the worlds of family and work. Jamie took the initial leap, following her passion for home design and creating a business that not only pursued a life long dream, but gave her more time with her two boys. Shortly after, Tracy, having the same desires, joined the journey and the rest is as they say, history! We feel so blessed to be two friends with the same passion for family and affordably making spaces beautiful. Even as attorneys, hiring an interior designer was outside of the realm of possibility. Raising families made it impractical and financially unfeasible. But, having spent time designing and styling our own homes, we knew that didn’t have to be the case. Beautiful, welcoming, and perfectly styled spaces are not dependent upon an unlimited budget or a kid or pet free home. Instead, all you really need is an unconstricted imagination, and the synergy of team dedicated to making home design, staging, and personal shopping accessible, no matter how big your budget or how full your home.
Hi, friends! Thank you, so much, for being here! It’s hard to believe that just a short time ago my world looked entirely different. Working as an attorney and trying to balance the demands of my job with my desire to be more present for my husband and two rambunctious, beautiful sons. I know I’m probably getting a lot of Amens right now, as so many of you can relate. After we learned that my second son had a neuromuscular disorder, however, that desire for balance became so much more. It awoke me- more than billable hours ever could- to the value of time, and how important it was for me to spend time doing what made me, and therefore, my family, truly happy. What I needed to do was something far more than just find balance.
Identifying what that meant for me didn’t actually take very long. If there was anything I loved growing up more than playing office in our basement, it was decorating. From my 90’s multi-colored bedroom, to the homemade curtains in my first apartment, creating and living in beautiful spaces has always been a passion of mine. So, I left my career and set out to start a blog and business dedicated to home design and styling.
Here was the additional rub, though. It was imperative to me that this venture offered equality in possibility. I am the product of a humble background. The daughter of a residential painter and home maker. Born and raised in a tiny row home in Baltimore City. To say we didn’t have much would be an understatement. But, that never stopped us from making our home as welcoming and as stylish as possible. And, it shouldn’t stop you! Access to a designer, to a home that reflects your style in a way that doesn’t exceed your budget- that is what Rose & Whistle was designed to make reality. Accessibility and affordability.
I hope you enjoy what you find here, friends, and are inspired to take your spaces from ordinary to extraordinary, even if they are spaces filled with lightsabers, pillows that double as a fort, and an ottoman fit for a catapult. : )
Hi there! First, I want to thank each and every one of you who are reading this. You are the reason Jamie and I work so hard at our little business and love what we do!
Like Jamie, I too have struggled with balancing a demanding legal career with my beautiful family, finding time for friends and loved ones, and making sure I have time to take care of myself too. Being a mommy, wife, lawyer, sister, daughter, friend, and just normal human being can be tough sometimes. And trust me – no matter what you see on social media, this website, or elsewhere, I certainly do not have it all figured out! But what I HAVE learned over the last few months and years is to find beauty and joy in the everyday process rather than constantly be waiting for the next great vacation, home purchase, weekend, etc. I’ve learned that living your life waiting for the next great thing makes you miss out on a lot of what’s right in front of you.
When I’m not busy focusing on my law practice (which, by the way, I absolutely love), or snuggling my almost two-year-old son with my husband and our golden retriever (yep, you guessed it – all of who I also majorly love), you’ll likely find me at Homegoods or some other antique or home décor store internally debating why I do or do not need every. single. thing. Similar to Jamie, my love of home spaces started young and has continued to grow and evolve as my family has grown.
Starting Rose and Whistle has always been an absolute dream of mine. Sharing my love of all things home with one of my girlfriends (Jamie) and all of you is a dream come true. We hope our little piece of the internet makes you as happy as it makes us! And thank you again for spending part of your day at Rose & Whistle!
